Insurance Basics: Types of Insurance Companies

After discussing a little bit about History of Insurance, it seems useful to discuss the next topic namely types of insurance companies. It needs to be discussed in order for us not to make a mistake when we need to use their services. However, before we discuss kinds of insurance companies, first of all let me define what it means by insurance companies. According to investorwords, insurance companies or insurance underweriter or insurer is companies that offer insurance policies to the public, either by selling directly to an individual or through another source such as an employee's benefit plan. Insurance companies are usually comprised of multiple insurance agents. An insurance company can specialize in one type of insurance or offers multiple types of insurance.

Knowing the definition, it is now time to discuss the kinds of the insurance companies. According to Wikipedia, insurance companies may be classified into two groups, namely, life insurance companies, which sell life insurance, annuities and pensions products and non-life, general, or property/casualty insurance companies, which sell other types of insurance.

General insurance companies may be further divided into the following sub categories: standard lines and excess line. Standard line insurance companies are "mainstream" insurers. These are the companies that typically insure autos, home or business. The premiums are usually lower and excess lines and can sell directly to individuals. Meanwhile, excess line insurance companies typically insure risks not covered by the standard lines market. The have more flexibility and can react faster that standard insurance companies because they are not required to file rates and forms as the "admitted" carriers do.
